URGENT NOTICE TO ALL SCHOOLS IN EASTERN NIGERIA
By the Honorable Minister of Education.
As diphtheria cases continue to rise in Eastern Nigeria, I urge all schools in the region to take immediate and proactive measures to safeguard the health and safety of our pupils. The recent outbreak in Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, Imo State, which has tragically claimed the lives of about 50 children, highlights the urgent need for vigilance and cooperation.
Understanding Diphtheria:
Diphtheria is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It is an airborne disease that can spread through:
- Airborne droplets (from coughing, sneezing, or talking)
- Close personal contact with infected individuals
- Contaminated surfaces and objects
Symptoms of diphtheria include:
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Swollen neck
- Breathing difficulties
- Thick, gray membrane covering the tonsils and throat
If left untreated, diphtheria can lead to serious complications, including:
- Respiratory issues
- Heart problems
- Paralysis
- Death
Precautionary Measures:
To prevent the spread of diphtheria, schools should take the following precautionary measures:
1. Ensure all pupils are fully vaccinated with the DPT vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus.
2. Promote good hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing with soap and water.
3. Avoid sharing utensils, food, or drinks.
4. Identify and isolate suspected cases immediately.
5. Report suspected cases to local health authorities.
Actions to Take:
To respond effectively to potential diphtheria cases, schools should:
1. Collaborate with local health authorities for monitoring and response.
2. Develop emergency response plans for suspected cases.
3. Conduct regular health checks and screenings.
4. Educate pupils, staff, and parents on diphtheria prevention and symptoms.
5. Maintain clean facilities and equipment.
Cooperation and Vigilance:
I urge all schools to cooperate fully with health authorities and report any suspected cases immediately. It is essential to prioritize pupil health and safety and stay informed about diphtheria updates and guidelines.
Stay Safe, Stay Informed:
Let’s work together to safeguard our pupils’ health and ensure a safe learning environment.
Sincerely,
Gabriel Chibuikem Eze (he/him/his)
Student Affairs Practitioner, Nigeria.
